11 Quick Edit to Change a Sound

With every Performance parameters can be tuned for filters, effects, ADSR, LFO and more, which can make one and the same Performance sound in completely different ways. The video shows how we can edit a sound using the physical knobs and by using the Quick Edit screen. If we changed a Performance and we’d like to recall it later, we can press the STORE button to save it as a new Performance in a User bank.

Let’s open the Performance called ‘CFX & Pad 2’. It can be found by pressing the Category button to open Performance Category Search and then type ‘cfx’ in the search field.

Press the Performance button to open the Performance screen. Here we see that this Performance is based on two Parts.

We also see that apparently knobs 1, 2 and 3 have a parameter assigned to them. We don’t know yet what parameters they control.

If we’d check the Motion Control Overview screen we see that not only knobs 1-3 have a function in this Performance, also the Super Knob does, as well as the Mod Wheel and the two Assign buttons. We still don’t know what they do.

To find out what they do we can go into Edit Mode by pressing the Edit button and visit the Common Audio > Control Assign screen. This will be the subject of a future video.

But of course we can also simply hear what they do. Let’s turn some knobs and change the sound, live, and listen.

When we turn a knob, the screen shows only that link. The parameter value is shown at the top. What we can hear is:
Knob 1 controls Reverb
Knob 2 controls Pad attack time
Knob 3 controls Pad filter
Mod Wheel controls Pad filter
The Super Knob controls knob 1 and 2, Reverb and Pad filter

We can already tweak the sound in many ways using these assigned knobs. But the knobs have double functions … we were in Assign mode, but let’s press the top button now, this changes the function of the knobs to control the parameters shown in the texts above them. Successive presses on the button moves the green LED to indicate which parameters the knobs operate.

We can now tweak the sound in many other ways.

We can also open the Motion Control Quick Edit screen. At the top of the screen it shows what we’re doing with the knobs. We can also tune parameters via the screen, it even shows a couple of extra parameters that can’t be controlled via the knobs.

Let’s make some edits and alter the sound some.

Right now we’re on the Common level, a parameter change here will influence all Parts. That’s not what I like to do right now …

… what I like to do is lower the filter cutoff frequency of Part 1 to dampen the CFX piano a bit and to increase the cutoff for Part 2 to brighten the Pad/Choir. I also like to pan the piano to the left and the pads to the right.

To do this first select Part 1, decrease the cutoff and move pan to the left. Alternatively we could also have activated Part 1 in the Performance screen, by tapping its name.

Then select Part 2 and increase the filter cutoff frequency and pan the sound to the right.

We can hear the changes live while we play the keyboard.

We’ve actually created a different sound now. If we like what we did and want to retrieve it later we may want to save it as a new Performance.

To save, press the STORE button.

This opens a screen where we can enter a name and tap Done when ready.

The new Performance is now added to the User Bank.

If we want to we can add a shortcut to a Live Set. This video sows how.

We can Audition both sounds to hear how we’ve changed it.
